Is there a difference between the mechanics in the Copernisis and in the Copernisis Extreme?

Looking in the key slot I have noticed some hole/gaps in the inside of my copernisis extreme on the bottom of the rings the balls rotate on. Are these significant or pointless? Are they what makes it extreme?
