Not to happy with the ISIS

Postby ocguy106 » Sun Jun 02, 2013 1:53 am

well I have had my Isis for a while but havent touched it in over a year because it is broke. I actually think the inside mech is poorly made unless they have made changes to it. The metal grooves cut into the side that are meant to hold the "catch" in place gave out and now no longer hold the catch down. So now the puzzle is just an expensive paper weight. I can't even put it back together and if I could it would be impossible to reopen as the catch would not say in the down position preventing it from being opened. I opened and closed the puzzle probably about 10 times total but I think for it to fail after only 10 times is unacceptable. I contacted SG and they said the best they could do was %20 off a new one. I would have been willing to accept a new one and pay for shipping in both directions (to ship the broken one back) but no go. Oh well it was a fun puzzle but I think this is a design flaw. Has anyone else had an issue like this?

I thought about that but I can't close it properly without utilizing the ball that would normally go on top. If that makes sense . Don't know how to explain without giving to much away to others who may have not solved.

Hi OCGuy

Matt is correct with what he is saying........

When closing try leaving the ball on the 'top' while pressing the plunger to close and then once locked you can navigate the ball back to its staring position.

This is what I have to do with mine and it works like a charm

You may also want to take a picture of your open Isis and send it to the gatekeepers so that you can gain access to the Isis 5% club so we can speak more indepth in regards to the Isis internals

Hope this helps

Hello there. I'm not sure if you are an employee or official, but I also have this same problem as the guy above. I got my Isis a few weeks ago as a birthday gift. I solved it a few Days ago after had putting in around 40 hours of working with it. Already on the second time I opened and reassembled the Isis the mechanics that lock the plate against the bottom was too weak to hold itself in place. So it kind of wore out in just a few opens and reassembly. I love the puzzle, it’s brilliant and highly decorative and collectable, and it’s just that I’d expect it to be of better quality for the quite steep price tag. Since mine is just 3-4 weeks old I assume there’s some sort of warranty on it, but I didn’t find any enclosed warranty papers in the box. Who do I turn to?

I read somewhere that doing the Isis in reverse is the prescribed method for re-setting it (as described above).

I'm lucky to have an original Isis, which has features that allow it to be re-set without having to do the whole puzzle in reverse - even on these early models the maze/lock does not stay in place once it's pushed down.

There's a topic on here somewhere that states that these useful features were apparently removed from the design in later production runs, because they facilitated an undesirable opening of the puzzle without it being solved fully!

Don't know if this helps, but I thought I'd throw in what I'd learned.

I have 3-4 ISIS, and 3/4 of them don't retain the latch in open position. It's not really a problem.

As stated above, you just re-assemble by placing the ball on the depressed plunger and screw it back together :)
