Lady fern in uk normally needs a Moist Shade area, this is why more is found in woodlands and forests, and not open country side, it also grows with Hart's tongue fern. The fern in the photo is Wallich's wood fern. therefore I think that the lane runs through a wood or along side a wood. Now look at the route and find how many times it passes a wood and a lane.

And if it was that simple I would have found it by now

I think I have cracked this one and its a great clue, you just have to look a little deeper into the picture and the riddle. Trouble is its a 5 hour round trip and we have ice and snow.

So is anybody still working on this?
The results of greasing somebody's palm didn't seem particularly helpful.
I came up with a method of deriving a location for this one, but it ended up being the central reservation somewhere on the M25

There's something about the way the clue is written that makes me think that we are supposed to decode a location from the clue rather than actually solve it.

:?

Who knows?
