dirkmay is right on the first.

If you book me at an early date,
I'll do my best to get there late.

or fetch me at your own expense,
but carriage I won't recompense

my guiding light's a little dim,
the odds it shines at all are slim

a wooden box cannot hold me,
a puzzle for you - what could I be?

Just thought it'd be good at this point to re-post the riddles we have here so far to save people hunting. :D

1. Mine:

The man who made me made me to sell me,
The man who bought me didn't use me,
The man who used me didn't know it.
What am I?

2. Dooners':
What has six faces
But does not wear makeup.
It also has twenty-one eyes,
But cannot see?

3. HappyHannah's:

Decapitate it to make it equal
Truncate it to make the Second
Cut it front and back, and it will be two less than it started

What is it?

4. Dirkmay's:

A man works on the 7th floor of a 10 floor building.
When the man goes to work, he takes the elevator up to the 5th floor and uses the stairs to the 7th.
When the elevator is occupied by people who go higher than the 5th floor, the man leaves at the higher floor or at the 7th.
When it rains, the man uses the elevator to the 7th.
Why does he do this?

I have the answers to all four so far, so if you have guesses, then you can PM me. :D

If anyone's interested there is a company called CCL Computers who supply computer components and peripherals. If you subscribe to their weekly newsletter they run a fortnightly riddle puzzle competition with really good prizes. The riddles are a combination of old chesnuts, and some original ones.

e.g. the current one is 'What occurs once in every minute, twice in every moment, yet never in a thousand years?'

I don't have a vested interest in this company, just a satisfied customer. I've no reason to believe that they pass details on to spammers and their weekly newsletter is exactly what it says, not spam. Oh and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Hah, I like that riddle.
Took me a little while, but made me smile when I realised the answer.

I'm not good at solving riddles but I do have one:

In marble walls as white as milk
lined with skin as soft as silk,
within a fountain crystal clear
a golden apple doth appear.
No doors are there to this stronghold
yet thieves break in to steal the gold.

What am I?
1 Isis opened but can't figure out the darn riddle
Will I ever open the Ramisis?
