I can usually get it done in about 2-5mins depending on how messed up it is at the last stages.

It's this one I'm having trouble with :)

I reckon I can do it in about 3 or 4 minutes. I've never really timed, so it may be longer than that.
I think the world record is about 9 or 10 seconds.
The one handed record is about 15 seconds.

There's a Rubik's cube simulator that you can download. That goes up to 20x20
I saw a youtube video of a guy solving it in something like 7 hours

I'm just under 1 minute with a standard Rubik's cube now (I've been practicing lately, need to have something to do while waiting for my Ramisis). It takes me about 30 minutes to do my 7x7x7.

7x7x7 ~ 30 mins
5x5x5 ~ 11 mins
4x4x4 ~ 7 mins
2x2x2 ~ 1-2 mins

The world record for 7x7x7 is 6-7 minutes ...

3x3x3 rubics cube - 32 years and still counting
(although not helped by the fact I don't have one anymore! :))

I was thinking though, are there any rules about how to set a rubics cube, wrt mixing it up so that it's ready to be solved? Are there a set number of moves that you must make randomly? Or do you mix it until there are no more than a certain number of a single colour on each side? Or give it to a 3 year old for an hour  Because how you set it, would affect the time it takes to solve it.

I'm glad you said that Karen, I was beginning to feel distinctly inferior. I have managed to do it by learning the moves, but I find I can't keep enough in my head to do it without!

I have always found that after 3 or 4 moves from the solved position it is just as difficult as 300 moves from it! :(

Just timed myself for the first time.
I did it in exactly 4 minutes 30 seconds. I haven't played with it for a while though, and it was not my best time by any means.

There are two new types of Rubik's cubes which just came out. So far they are only available in Japan, but they can be ordered from http://torito.jp/shopping/search-e.cgi? ... ubepuzzles

The first is the Mirror Blocks http://torito.jp/shopping/picture.cgi?mirrorblocks which work kind of like a standard 3x3x3 cube, but instead of 6 different colors, each side is a different size/shape. When solved, it is a cube of the same size as a standard Rubik's cube but when it is scrambled it looks like a piece of modern art.

The second is the Void Cube http://torito.jp/shopping/picture.cgi?voidcube which is like a standard 3x3x3 but without any centers. This can cause a parity error when solving it where you end up with 1 piece out of place, a condition that doesn't happen with a standard Rubik's cube.

I already have a couple of the Mirror Blocks and just placed an order for some Void Cubes.

When Rubik's Cube first appeared in about '79 or '80 our eldest daughter Helen was about eight or nine years old. We gave her a Cube and told her what was to be done; she'd never seen one before. She came back to us about ten minutes with the whole thing neatly completed. "Marvellous," we thought until we noticed some of the sqares seemed to be slightly out of line. It took us a while to realise that we had not shown her how it actually moved and she had done it by carefully peeling off all the coloured squares and sticking them back on again in the right order.

I've just seen a sudoku cube
To solve it, you need to make sure that the numbers 1 through to 9 appear once only on each face. Each number should be correctly orientated.
That one must be seriously hard unless you memorise it first.
