The straight eight letters are:

HIJKLMNO (H to O) - H2O - Water

Adding weight suggests heavy water and therefore the thing that makes heavy water heavy
is an abundance of hydrogen isotopes in the deuterium form.

I'll let you off the twenty quid, since I had a few guesses and you gave three clues in one.

I haven't a clue really, I just hoped I might be lucky.

If drfc wants to give a prize but toxophilite doesn't feel easy about taking it, why not agree on a charity? This is what I intended to say if I had won. A small charity that will use it though, not one of those that just lets it's wide boys play the market.
