There's a town that fits PUZZ's clue that has an Ebenezer Row parallel to a Canon Steps (missing an N though). There's also a St Mary's and a few Mary related roads. Nothing about a library though.

I've all but given up on my thought process for this... love the wedding rhyme thoughts.

Was looking a search area a few hours away but can't get a link... time's precious and the weathers dreadful.

Try this for size!

Ebenezer's house could be a Church  Chapel etc

Brighton has an area called kemp town, (Puzz's clue.. single coin hidden in two towns at the same time)

There's a nice park in kemp town "Queen's park" (Queen Mary), and it's next to a Chapel call Ebenezer's

I don't think this is the right area, but try this way of thinking with your thoughts..............

Who knows - maybe

I've had several very tenuous ideas spread across the country but nothing that even looks that close really; despite one or two intially looking promising.

I was too busy trying to fit it into some where up North I'd totally blanked out the rest of the country.... I'm giving this a miss now.

Love the thought process for the South Coast.

"Not in the library," -> something borrowed (as in a book on loan)
"Not inside a Cannon," -> something 'blew' (yes, I know, it's a bit forced - the capital 'C' is odd though)
"Not at Ebenezer's house," -> something new (Scrooge never bought new stuff)
"Mary might know the way." -> only "something old" left.

Well I liked this idea but was unsure about your interpretation of the last two lines.
I would have gone for something old = Ebenezer
something new = The New Queen Mary liner

This did seem more a possibility as I'm sure theres an exhibition of the new/old ships.

Who knows! I'm stumped the more I read.

Slithering off for a hot choc.

I think the town that Skizz had in mind is a possibility as there is a Crown Inn there which may go some way towards unravelling the "coin" element of the extra clue.

Hmmm. Interesting. I think I know the location. As I don't live anywhere near by, does anyone who lives in the Shropshire area want to take a look somewhere?

Maybe not a model village, more like a city!
Would SW even dare hide it where I think it could be? (Might be out driving next weekend, if I'm not too late.) :?

I must admit I originally thought this was in Chatham (Kent) because the new Dickens World theme park is based there and it has a haunted house feature known as Ebenezer's House. It is in the maritime area where the library is located, there are cannons outside the library on the gun wharf and on the other side is a derelect church which used to be called St. Mary's. Totally wrong though.

The later clues pinned it down to Bridgnorth in Shropshire. Bridgnorth is actually two towns, the High Town and the Low Town separated by a 100 ft. sandstone cliff. There are I believe nine ancient sets of steps that connect the two towns and the key words in each line of the riddle refer to four of them: Library Steps, Cannon Steps, Ebenezer Steps and St. Mary's Steps. The riddle implies that the coin was hidden on St.Mary's Steps which could have been like looking for a needle in a haystack. So we assumed that the use of the word 'Way' implied a way marker or signpost. The only such nameplate is at the top as shown in this photograph:

http://www.davidbirch.f2s.com/isis/steps2.jpg

There was a large gap between the signpost and the wall on the lefthand side but on the right it was tighter. There was also a piece of dead reed from that plant in the background forced between the sign and the wall at this point. I hooked it out and could see the edge of the polythene bag but it was really wedged tight. I pulled the bag out but it just tore leaving the coin wedged in. So we gently pulled on the sign, the coin dropped out the bottom and we went down the pub to celebrate.

I think the word 'house' in the riddle was just put in to make it scan and provide a bit of misdirection (it certainly misdirected me), although there is a supposedly haunted cottage at the bottom of Ebenezer Steps known as Abanazer's Cottage.

Beautiful place Bridgnorth, well worth a visit.

Hope this was of interest, Dave
