Equation??????????????

Okay, so I managed to get the puzzle open through blind luck, and counted all my ring positions so that I can do it again. I'm kinda working backwards now trying to solve the equation. I feel like I have tried every combination, but just cannot come up with anything that equals the ring positions I used to open it. I'm not asking for the answer but could someone PM some hints on how to understand the equation so that I can work it out?

Also, I have heard from some people that the numbers in clues provided on the copernisis website are wrong, so you cannot use them to come up with the correct solution. Can anyone confirm this?
