Handy website for looking at castles. I've looked at every one except scottish highlands (got bored by that time). No definite matches, a couple of possibles.

Checked alot of castles chad including the site you gave. Have noticed the same sort of holes in a few so maybe on the right track. I have an idea were but cannot in any way go. My daughter used to go to a famous ballet school near there. I have searched pictures of place and found similar. Wish I could put it all down here but may spoil the search. Oh and might be completely off my head of course it has happened before ! :D :D :D

If it is a duct for a watermill then it is almost certainly one of the type that would have a millpond nearby. These were used in places where there was no fast water flow. The millpond would be fed by a stream and would fill in about twenty-four hours. Then the sluices could then be opened and the water flow could drive the mill for about two hours, enough for most work. The one next to me is of this type. The water entrance however is covered with a broad metal grid that would stop larger floating bits, like branches, from damaging the wheel. Even if this was no longer in position there would be evidence that it had been there. I do not think that the wall is of a good enough construction to be a watermill.

It could be a creep hole designed to allow cattle to pass under a road or whatever to another field. A cripple hole was smaller and would allow sheep but not cattle to pass.

It could be an icehouse designed for a years storage of ice cut in mid-winter (winters were colder then). These varied widely in standard of construction but only the best would have an arch. They were usually a stone igloo that was then earthed over, but they could be dug out of a hillside and a stone front built. In most cases the earth was then allowed to become covered with undergrowth to help keep things cool.

The holes are probably drain holes but there is no sign of dribbling from them. Reason 1. If they were made of porous clay then water loss could be by evaporation with very little dribbling. Reason 2. If the pipes behind the holes pass right through an earth bank they may slope away from the entrance. This would allow air passage through the pipes to aid evaporation and all dribbling would be at the other end.

The entrance could be designed for other underground storage, cheese perhaps.

It looks like no one lives close enough to recognise this one.

hey first post on here, but after spending a few days reading up, finally got the courage to join (and found something else to distract me from my degree! lol)

I printed out and took the photo to my geography lecturers and they said that the stone looks like sandstone and it looks like somewhere like Peak District area (New Mills is a possible), Cornwall or South Wales! As to what it is... no idea! it looks quite well constructed though - the planes in the wall are quite straight and even (unlike drywall), but the moss at the bottom of the wall does look like it's somewhere with water or north facing wall (photo taken looking south).
Just hoping for a clue... have had to get some wrist supports for my laptop as I'm spending so much time at it, looking for pictures!! lol
