Plunger Woes (or, the saga of my aching fingers)

Hmmm.
My friend has stolen my NKryptor (as I remain, despite helpful hints, woefully unable to open it) so I'm back to plugging away - literally - at my Isis again.
Now then, this post is taking me about fifteen times longer to post than usually because my fingers are so stiff from pushing the bloody plunger. Sometime it seems that it sticks and won't go all the way down, but I think that so far it's just my fingers giving up on me.
So, a question:
Will I be able to tell when I've "reached the halfway stage" clearly (as in it's a very "solid" half-way stage), or is it something fleeting that might not be ... so solid...? I just don't know whether I'm getting there or whether it's just my fingers, or perhaps simply a lack of lubrication :-$
