Clue help and progress on solving the Isis

I think mine's a dud

Postby robhillier » Sun Jul 29, 2007 5:47 pm

Hiya folks,

So, after solving the clues in the booklet weeks ago, and reading this forum here and there, I finally had some time to sit down and actually play with the Isis.

I had read about the "dominant theory of the universe" clue, and was trying to employ it, but only half heartedly really. I used only my two hands, and not with very much gusto, but, my Isis just unscrewed afterwards. I sat there in shock for a moment as I looked at the two halves, with the key inside. Had I solved it? Was that IT?

Then I realized that I could not have solved it properly. I had not seen any of the markers of progress (the sound of three ball bearings, getting the placentas 180 degrees apart), but had really just barely employed the theory, and it came apart. Then, upon closer inspection, I noticed that... how do I word this... the indicator that the theory had been employed successfully was still in its starting position.

As I do genuinely want to solve the puzzle properly, I decided I would reassemble the unit and try from the beginning. I did, however, remove the key, so that if something DID go wrong during reassembly, and I tried to get it fixed or replaced, I could at least prove to SonicWarp that I had gotten into it, and was not just looking for a replacement because of a scratch or whatever.

So, I took the key out, and screwed it carefully back together. Keep in mind that everything (as far as I could tell) was still in starting position. It screwed back together very nicely and smoothly, with a reassuring CLICK at the end, which I had read about. But, there is now a gap of about 2 mm between the top and bottom half, and I am able to rotate one half about 3 cm, and then the threads bind and it jams. I don't want to do anything more (like try to employ the theory again), in case things aren't lined up properly, but I don't know what else I can do.

Someone please confirm to me that it should NOT in fact be that simple, and that something has gone wrong. (By the way, I have not registered my key, as I don't want to register until I legitimately solve the puzzle.)

Also, any suggestions as to what I should do with my now jammed Isis?

hi Rob,
as you suspected you havent opened it the normal way, as described by the clues.
just through sheer chance you aligned all the inner workings, a one in a million shot and it opened for you.
i would lay money on the fact that its not faulty.
as for resetting it, you have started the reset process but the reassuring click you've heard was premature and now its stuck, half open half closed. it is possible for this to be reset correctly but you would have to send it to SW or find someone near you that knows how to reset it.
where r u?
you could be told how to do it but it would seriously compromise your knowledge of the puzzle and you would easily open it, thus spoiling your enjoyment.
you will not be able to open this isis as it stands and should not try as you may cause more serious damage!!
hope this helps, please feel free to PM me for more help or info,

I agree with bingabonga totally, I am 100% sure it's not faulty, your just very lucky :P

As for you little problem with resetting it, without giving too much detail...
Normally, as long as the two placents are inline with each other and it's fairly well closed then you should still be okay to try to open it as normal.
However, if they are out of alignment then you have an issue :?

The only thing is that I find it odd that you say it binds and jams, I have a good feeling I know what this is, and unfortunately if it is what I think it is then you might be stuffed anyway :?

At the end of the day you have an incorrectly reset Isis, which is never a good thing, and you have little to lose, so if it were mine I'd just carry on and try to open it normally

disclaimer: the choice is yours though....

Greetings folks.

Sorry for the delay in responding here - it's been a busy week.

Just so that we're all on the same page with what I'm talking about, below are some photos with the placentas aligned, and with the placentas as far apart as I can get them before the ISIS jams. Notice the gap between the centre ring and the bottom half.

Do these images lead you guys, or anyone else, to any conclusions that differ from above? Has anyone seen this before?

Placentas apart:

Thanks all...

Hi bluesign2k,

I've had it since the beginning of June, though I didn't really start playing with it until late July (when I had this problem). Why do you ask?

So the placentas are 90 degrees apart? And you can't rotate it at all? That shouldn't happen, but let's assume something went wrong...
Had you fully opened the Isis, or were you still trying to unscrew it? If you were in the process of unscrewing it, the the bb should still be in the right place and you can do the last steps again. If you altered the parts inside at all, then things may become a bit trickier. All is most certainly not lost, as the Isis is pretty much (tho not entirely) capable of being opened no matter what.

If you need more "spoiler related" help, just PM me.
